Guest conductor for Nowel Syng We, and the Medieval Women’s Choir vocal coach, Nancy Zylstra is well-known to Seattle audiences as a singer who earned critical acclaim and recognition for her pure and expressive singing. As a soloist she performed for such conductors as Ton Koopman, Andrew Parrott, Gustav Leonhardt, and Nicholas McGegan and with The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra (Toronto), Northwest Chamber Orchestra, Portland Baroque Orchestra and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. She was heard in the early music festivals of Berlin, Regensberg, Berkeley, Versailles and Vancouver. In Seattle she was a Cathedral Soloist at St. James Cathedral. Zylstra is a faculty member of Oberlin Conservatoryís Baroque Performance Institute and The Seattle Academy of Baroque Opera (SABO). In November she was Assistant Music Director of SABO’s performance of Cavalieri’s oratorio, Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo. A popular clinician, she has taught master classes at the UW, Portland State University, Reed College, Willamette University, University of Toronto, Swarthmore College, for the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and the Voice Foundation. She has taught studio voice at Pacific Lutheran University, Cornish College of the Arts and the UW. Zylstra has always had a passion for choral music and was a founder of Seattle Pro Musica and Choral Arts (for which she has also been vocal coach). She currently serves on the board of Early Music America.
